Migration to ConfigMgr 2012 R2 with migration tool or Powershell?

There are still quite some companies that have to migrate their SCCM 2007 environment to Configuration Manager 2012 R2, even though it is 2015 now. One of the important things during a migration are migration of the software packages. The thing with the inbuilt migration tool is that packages will be migrated to … packages. Not what I would want, because I would like to use applications or better said, the application model. In the trainings that I give I always say that you should use the application model and move away from the legacy packages (unless really not possible). In a migration scenario where you use the inbuilt tool, you first have to migrate your packages to packages in CM 2012 R2 and then convert the packages to applications with a conversion plug-in. Both steps might require extra actions depending on the situation before migration can start. The idea to…

Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Cumelative Update 2

It has been a while since my last blog, so time to change that! I have been busy lately mostly because earlier this year I changed jobs which took some time to get used to the organization and find my way in the new working environment. Next to that I went from project to project, so no complaining of making the move to KPN Consulting. Ok, Yesterday (27/06/2014) the CU (cumulative Update) 2 for Configuraton Manager 2012 R2 has been released and I decided to immediately test the installation in my test environment. You can request the hotfix at the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2970177 This page also provides an overview of the fixes that have been solved and the the action you have to do after installation. I would suggest to read through this page and if you are using Powershell in your environment I would also recommend to read the next page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2962855 where you can…

Add Network Driver To A Bootimage

At the moment I am training an employee at a client to get more familiar with Configuration Manager task sequences and we ran into the following problem. When we PXE booted a new model of hardware (a laptop) the machine could not connect to the network and therefor did not get the task sequence. Offcourse for purpose of training this was a good thing… something going wrong 🙂 First we had to find out that the machine did not get a ip address and when we knew we needed to solve it. It was clear that the network driver for the new model was not available within the bootimage. The next step was to import the driver and add it to the bootimage used…. and go for it again. Unfortunately no success, still no network and no image deployment. Maybe the wrong driver? Or something else. Together we discussed the…

Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 CU3

Cu3 for ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 has been released, so I immediately thought I should test installation in my testlab environment. As a matter of fact I want to implement it next week in the project I am working on if all goes well. Information about the things that new and that are fixed can be found at the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2882125 and you can request the hotfix there as well. Installation is similar to the previous cumulative update, with the same installation to go through. I added 2 screenshots of the installation below. This screenshot shows you where to apply the update and it will create packages that you can deploy to the clients, console machines or site systems. The second screenshot shows that the installation was a success and you can reboot your server to finish. After the patch has been applied to a client the client version will be 5.00.7804.1400 as you can see…

MAC OS-X Management With ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 – Intro

I am currently working on a project where the organization wants to manage MAC OS-X in the environment by using Configuration Manager. ConfigMgr 2012 SP1 Cloud Distribution Point In Azure

This blog will show you how to create a cloud distribution point from Configuration Manager in Azure. I chose to create 2 tabs in this blog one called “Create The Cloud DP” and the other “Certificate Creation”. I did this to not make this a lengthy blog and to keep it readible. There are a couple of things that are needed before you can create the Cloud DP. The following things need to be arranged: Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] A PKI Infrastructure [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] Windows Azure Subscription [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] Certificate needed for secure communication [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] Import the certificate in Windows Azure (*.cer file) [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] Export the private key of the certificate (*.pfx file) [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] Create the Cloud distribution point [icon  icon=”0101.png”][/icon] The first 3 steps are clear, no need to say anything about that. The 4th point on the list is creating the certificate. Steps 4 to 6…

Error Installing App-V 5.0 SP1 client with CM 2012 SP1

This week I encountered an issue installing the App-V 5.0 SP 1 client with Configuration Manager 2012 SP 1. I went to a client to upgrade the CM 2012 environment to CM 2012 SP1. Having done this before several  times I had no issues during that process. Since we had some time left the client asked me to help with the installing of the App-V client through CM 2012 SP1. All sources were downloaded, so we could start to create an application immediately. As a command line we used the following: appv_client_setup.exe /q /SHAREDCONTENTSTOREMODE=1 I had used this command line before to distribute the App-V 5.0 client with Configuration Manager, so all looked promising…. and it was promising, CM 2012 SP1 functioned as expected and the application arrived at the targeted workstation. But then CATASTROF, DISASTER! The client failed to install and the picture below shows the details from the…

Application Model: A Dependency That Has Been Superseded

The new (if you still can call it new) application model in Configuration Manager 2012 has a couple of nice features, but from reading about it is it not always clear how it exactly works. In this blog I like to discuss the Dependency, Supersendence options and what happens if a dependency is superseded. Consider the following scenario: I have created the following applications 7-Zip, Adobe Reader X and Adobe Reader XI. In the 7-Zip application I have set Adobe Reader X as a dependency. With this setup I will go through the following steps: Install 7-Zip Adobe Reader X (dependency of 7-Zip) will be superseded by Adobe Reader XI After the 2 steps I will bring my VM back to the starting stage and execute the last step: Install 7-Zip again with the dependency that has been superseded In the last step I want to find out if 7-Zip…
